Crime: Established serious criminal defence practice, increasingly incorporating advising potential witnesses and corporate manslaughter charges. Prosecutes cases of substance or particular interest.

Disciplinary & Regulatory: Representation of solicitors facing disciplinary/regulatory sanctions. General Medical Council representation and advice, most recently Dr Jane Barton over three month proceedings involving allegations relating to deaths of elderly patients.

Courts Martial and Public Inquiries: Has acted for Colonel Mendonca, successfully representing him at his Court Martial and currently representing him in the Baha Mousa inquiry.

Fraud/Crime

  • R v Mabey & Johnson Ltd. acted for the company in the first successful judicially approved criminal plea settlement agreement with the SFO
  • Represented the SFO in the BAE investigation and settlement, involving high profile allegations of bribery and corruption

  • GMC v Dr Jane Barton: Represented Dr Barton in disciplinary proceedings involving very serious allegations arising from a series of deaths of elderly patients at Gosport Memorial Hospital
  • The Baha Mousa public inquiry, representing Colonel Mendonca, having successfully defended the Colonel in his Court Martial

Defence:

  • Successfully defended Colonel Mendonca, the highest ranking British Officer ever to face charges of war crimes, in the five month Court Martial, emanating from the death of an Iraqi civilian whilst in army custody
  • SFO v George: major false accounting charges involving a publicly quoted company, successful application to dismiss the charges, and the decision of the Director of the SFO to seek a voluntary bill of indictment
  • Ray Hatton - defending defamation action brought by Frank Warren; settled
  • Instructed to represent the News of the World in a libel action brought by Kieren Fallon, settled
  • R v Fugill: Manager charged with manslaughter and Health & Safety charges in connection with the Hatfield rail crash, acquitted
  • R v Shoesmith: Police officer charged with others in connection with the shooting of an unarmed man
  • R v Goldsmith: successfully defended the millionaire when he was alleged to have arranged a contract killing of his wife
  • Richard Lines: former Chairman and Chief Executive of MTM charged by the SFO with false accounting, conspiracy to commit false accounting, and making misleading statements
  • R v Guppy & Marsh: charged with fraud, theft and false accounting in February 1993 for staging a faked jewel robbery and claiming £1.8 million from the insurers, part of London's Lloyd's insurance market

Prosecution:

  • Landhurst Leasing: SFO prosecution of the former Chairman and former Finance Director on charges of corruption, convicted
  • R v. Whiting: CPS prosecution of the “Sarah Payne” case, convicted
  • Stephen Hinchliffe: SFO prosecution concerning fraudulent conduct in relation to the affairs of the Facia Group, convicted
  • Richard Spearman: The first successful SFO prosecution for insider-dealing concerning an insider-dealing conspiracy and sensitive RIPA applications
